BPM tells you how fast. The bar tells you where.
Your visuals can run at exactly the same BPM as the DJ and still feel wrong. The tempo is right; the place in the bar is not. A scene change on beat three reads as a mistake to a room that is counting to the one.
Speed and place are two different facts
Tempo says how many beats pass per minute. Bar phase says which of the four beats is sounding right now. Dance music is built and mixed in bars and phrases — eight, sixteen, thirty-two — and the crowd feels the one even when nobody is counting out loud.
That is why a visual that follows the tempo perfectly can still look lost: its flashes are on the beat, but its big changes arrive a beat early or two beats late. The fix is not a better BPM. It is knowing where the bar starts.
Where bar phase can come from
- Listening to the room. Audio analysis can estimate a tempo, but deciding which beat is the one from sound alone is a guess, and it drifts. More on that in why guessing the BPM from a microphone will always drift.
- Your own tap. You give the tempo and can mark the one by hand. It works until the DJ nudges the pitch or drops a beat, and then it is on you to catch it.
- MIDI clock. It carries tempo pulses and start/stop. In a typical DJ setup it does not tell the receiver which beat of the bar is playing.
- A shared musical grid on the network. Ableton Link gives compatible participants a common tempo and phase.
- The booth itself. The DJ players on the booth network already know the beat and its position in the bar, because they are the ones playing the track.

The grid is not the room
Phase fixes where the beat is in the music. It does not fix the time sound needs to reach the back of the venue — that is a separate calibration, and the two together are what make a cut land for the whole crowd.
A soundcheck routine
- Same network as the booth. A cable to the booth switch beats Wi-Fi in a room full of phones.
- Watch the pulse before doors. The booth panel shows the tempo and the beat of the bar: let the DJ play a track and check that the one lights on the one.
- Choose the leading deck. Pick the deck the visuals follow, so the show moves with the DJ through every blend.
- Keep a fallback. TAP or audio stays available if the booth network is not reachable that night.
