How to sync live visuals with Ableton Link.

A BPM value tells two machines how fast to run. It does not tell them where the beat is. Ableton Link adds the shared musical phase that makes the difference between matching a number and landing the same hit.

Tempo is not enough

Two applications can both show 128 BPM and still disagree about the next kick. Tempo is the rate; phase is the position inside the repeating beat grid. For live visuals, both matter: a flash that repeats at the correct speed but lands between beats still looks wrong.

Ableton Link keeps compatible participants on a shared tempo and musical phase over a local network. Each participant keeps its own media and performance logic; Link gives them a grid on which to agree.

How LumaDeck Pro lands beats and bars

LumaDeck Pro uses the shared Link phase as the anchor for its visual beat and bar grid. With transport and phase enabled, a start is armed for the next compatible downbeat instead of beginning halfway through a beat. From there, beat accents and bar-boundary decisions stay on the same recurring musical grid.

That is why the visual timeline can land hits and bar boundaries together with another Link participant. The useful result is deterministic musical alignment, not a BPM display that merely shows the same number.

What Start/Stop adds

When Start/Stop synchronization is enabled by the participants, play and stop intentions can also be shared. Starting from the prepared point lets independent timelines begin on the same compatible boundary; stopping leaves each participant responsible for its own media and state.

The boundary: Link does not know the song position

Link does not transmit an absolute song position, a timeline seek, a cue marker or the identity of the track. If one participant jumps from one part of its arrangement to another, Link cannot make a different timeline chase that seek.

So these two statements are both true: LumaDeck Pro can keep beats and bar boundaries aligned on the shared grid, and Link still does not know which absolute bar of a song is playing. Absolute position requires a separate source designed to carry it.

A practical show setup

  • Put the participants on the same local network. Link works over Wi-Fi; a dedicated wired path removes variables from a show rig.
  • Enable Ableton Link on each participant. Confirm that the expected participant count is visible before doors open.
  • Choose Link as the tempo authority in LumaDeck Pro. Keep audio, TAP, MIDI or timecode available as deliberate alternatives, not competing masters.
  • Prepare the starting point. Link aligns the recurring musical grid; matching absolute timeline positions remains the operator's responsibility.
  • Calibrate the visual chain separately. Projector and room latency can shift what the audience perceives even when the musical grid is correct.

If participants do not appear, check that they share the same local network and that guest isolation, VPN rules or a firewall are not separating discovery. If tempo agrees but the screen still feels early or late, troubleshoot output and venue latency rather than changing the Link beat.
